About Graders

Introduction

A grader is most commonly referred to as a blade which is an engineering vehicle. It is used to create a flat surface. All typical grader models are fitted with 3 axles which the cab and engine are situated above the rear and back 3 axles. The graders purpose is to completely flatten areas which have been destroyed by larger machinery like bob cats, back hoes and loaders due to construction work. The grader’s blades will smooth out rough surfaces by the machine constantly going over the rougher areas.

Grading Machine Graders are most commonly used in the construction of unpaved areas, road maintenance and preparing base courses throughout landscaping. A grader will prepare base course by smoothening the surface out till its flat then it creates a wider areas for concrete, asphalt or paved to be laid. A grader is highly beneficial for this type of landscaping application because it is a quick and thorough way ofr creating a smooth and stable surface.

Graders are also used for snow removal. The large blades which the grader houses will push and move the snow which blocks driveways, yards and roads. Larger property owners throughout Canada own a grader for this purpose.

Features of a Grader

The main feature of the grader vehicle is its moldboard. The moldboard is also called a blade. It has a reversible cutting edge which can be easily replaced. It also can be manually adjusted to a 12 inch ratio left or right of the machine. The width of the moldboard is 84 inches which is a perfect size for all areas which need to be graded. Here is a list of some of the main features of a grader:

  • Laser control package for precise grade control on flatwork contracting. The laser system automatically moves the blade up or down to keep the base material exactly on grade.
  • Formed modular frame which is durable and high in strength.
  • A hydraulic controlled moldboard which is operated by switched located on the steering lever for precise fingertip control for the operator.
  • All wheel drive and floatation tires for excellent traction and steering on all types of surfaces.
  • Has the power to clear a knocked down house by moving the materials and smoothing the surface extensively.
  • The back boards featured on the grader are heat treated for an extended life span.
  • The grader is powered by a turbo horse powered engine (125 to 500 horse power) which is tough and reliable.

Grader Attachment Kits

Grader Attachments Grader attachments kits are available to those who own or run a bobcat, back hoe, tractor or loader. A grader attachment kit can be purchased and easily mounted to one of the above mentioned machines. The attachments include a large grader blade and a hydraulic system which the blade uses to power on. Grader attachment kits are highly beneficial because grader machine are generally very expensive, by purchasing a grader attachment kit you will be saving loads of time and money.

The grader attachment kit works exactly like the grader machine once it is installed onto a bobcat, backhoe or loader. When not in use it can be removed and placed in a safe place.

Overview

A graders main purpose as explained is to create a flat surface. Most graders are fitted with 6 tiers with a 12 foot adjustable blade which is situated beneath the machines cab to push and spread gravel, dirt or any other surface to clear it and make it flat. Generally graders are known as road graders which are mostly used on road construction and maintenance. Landscaping contractors may decide to hire or use a grader on properties which has been excavated or messed up by other types of machinery. Graders are the most practical machinery for constructing a flat surface. They can be purchased from a starting price of $200,000 or hired weekly for as little as $300 to $800 per week.
