Building picket fences is easy to accomplish as long as the right tools and materials are used. The project can be a simple do-it-yourself project probably only taking up a full weekend or two which is great. If homeowners are deciding to change their existing fence or install a new picket fence then they should consider seeking information on whether they need to obtain council approval. |
Installing a Picket Fence
| The first and important task of building picket fence is to consider where exactly the fence is going to be installed as straight picket fences are easier to install than curved and angled picket fences. If you are building picket fences on your side of the property then it is important to consider the neighbors beside you otherwise if it is a decorative picket fence just at the front of the home you will not need too. Measure up the fence site so that the materials can be purchased. |
|
Purchase all the required fencing materials such as: pickets, fence posts, masonry string, gating equipment, bolts and screws. Masonry tools along with a wood cutter will also assist with the installation process.
Installing Posts
 |
The posts of the picket fence need to be installed 2 feet into the ground. 1 meter is a good gap between posts. Once the hole has been dug place the post in the hole and do the same with the next post. Once all the posts are in place they need to be leveled to ensure they are in line with each other and that the hole which is dug is approximately 2 feet for every post. Once they are all in line it is time to fill in the post holes. Some prefer to use concrete to fill in the post holes but crushed gravel and dirt can also be used. Once the fence posts have been installed two long timber posts should be applied to the posts parallel to the ground and each other. This will also help with the leveling of the posts and make it easier for the pickets to be installed. |
Installing Pickets
| The pickets for the fence need to be installed individually. If homeowners have chosen to carve out designs on the pickets then this needs to be done before the installation. The first picket to be installed should begin in a corner. The picket should be drilled and screwed into the horizontal posts of timber. They should be drilled at the top and bottom of the horizontal posts to ensure their stability. Continue to apply picket by picket until the entire fence has been built. Gates can be installed separately and a space can be left out for the gate during the picket building. The fully built picket fence can then be painted to a preferred color. |
