Landscape Irrigation - Water Drainage

About Water Drainage

Introduction

Water drainage is an integral component of a successful and healthy landscape. Especially in regions where there are heavy wet seasons, water drainage must be addressed at the development stage of a landscape project to ensure a beautiful healthy landscape for many years to come. A sufficient water drainage system will reduce your gardening and maintenance time and keep your lawns, trees and plants happy and healthy.

Water Drainage Issues

Pavement Water Drainage

Water drainage for a paved area will prevent excess water from spilling over onto the lawn and therefore creating muddy patches. Another problem that can arise is the presence of excess water during wet seasons may eventually result is a moss and algae build up on the pavers. This is far more serious if there is a timber decking, wood may begin to rot and erode.

Driveway Water Drainage

Trench & Channel Drains Driveway paving can face the exact same problems that can occur on a pavement. If not properly drained, the excess water may eventually cause a build up of moss and algae on the pavers. Not only that, but the excess water can be dangerous for vehicles and also pedestrians. When planning the development of a paved or concrete driveway, if the land is completely flat, the installation of a channel drain will prevent excess water from entering the garage or the front door.

Lawn Water Drainage

It is important to regularly maintain your lawn to keep your landscape looking beautiful. If you notice excessive water patches days after heavy rain, this means that a water drainage system is needed. One indication is that if the neighbor’s property slopes down towards your property, chances are that in heavy rain, the water will flow to the lowest point, which may be in your landscape. Installing French drains will allow the excess water to soak down into the under ground drains and direction to a ditch or soakaway.

Roof Water Drainage

Downpipes Roof water drainage is another important factor to consider. The positioning of the down pipes from the roof of a home can affect your landscape. If there is insufficient water drainage system to transport the water flow into a drain, excess water will fill an area and create a large muddy patch. Overtime this area will be become useless as it will be difficult to grow grass or plants. When there is heavy rain, if you begin to notice excess water near the home, it is wise to have your gutters and down pipes checked, and also clean them regularly to prevent blockage.

The Effects of Poor Water Drainage

  • Areas of the lawn will become muddy and unattractive
  • After periods of heavy rain, it will take a longer time for the surface to dry, and therefore any traffic will damage the lawn
  • Plants, flowers and grass will die and that area may not be healthy enough for new plants and grass to grow
  • Poor drainage can, in some cases, cause fungal disease
  • If your landscape is damaged, it may be very expensive to renovate or replace
