About Fertilizer Spreaders

Fertilizing Landscaping, Plants, Trees and Crops

Fertilizing is an essential material which is used in the landscaping and garden industry to provide plants, trees, flowers and crops with vital nutrients which they may lack in or they have been affected by harsh weather conditions during the colder seasons of the year. There are many different types of fertilizers which range from organic, inorganic, chemical, and natural. Plants, crops and trees should be fertilized at least once or twice a year.

Applying fertilizer is a difficult and uneasy task which turns a lot of people off. Some organic fertilizers contain animal manure which makes the smell disgusting but it’s great for the garden. Nowadays applying fertilizer can be simply done by using a fertilizer spreader. There are many different types of fertilizer spreaders to suit your application needs both small and large.

Types of Fertilizer Spreaders

Fertilizer Spreader There are fertilizer spreader designs to suit all types of applications. Fertilizer spreaders make fertilizing simple, fast and effective. By using fertilizer spreader coverage is even and no wastage or the risk of fertilizer runoff will occur. Most local garden centers will sell fertilizer spreaders at your convenience. All types of fertilizer spreaders can be pushed along like a mower for ease in application methods.

Broadcast Fertilizer Spreader

This type of fertilizer spreader is also referred to as a rotary spreader. This type is designed to cover large areas quite quickly. At the top of the machine is a hopper which holds all the fertilizer. The fertilizer travels down through a spinning disc which then disperses the fertilizer into the required areas. The broadcast fertilizer spreader is mainly designed for large farming properties because it will throw fertilizer around a fair bit; this is why coverage is so great. It is also a push long machine. This type of fertilizer spreader may not be recommended for residential use.

Drop Fertilizer Spreader

Drop Spreader A drop fertilizer spreader is designed for the more simple applications such as small areas and small gardens. Straight lines can be achieved which is ideal for small landscaped garden beds. Coverage is even and no wastage will occur. Fertilizer is kept at the top of the drop fertilizer spreader in a hopper which then releases it straight downwards onto the application site. The drop spreader will get small jobs done quickly and overlapping the application areas is a good idea because the drop spreader only disperses amounts at a certain width therefore some areas may be missed or uneven layouts may occur. This machine is a push along.

Handheld Fertilizer Spreader

Handheld fertilizer spreaders are mainly designed for residential use where areas are generally small in diameter. This fertilizer spreader operates by fertilizer being applied to the top hopper only in small amounts and a knob be turned to release the fertilizer into the application site. Some types of handheld fertilizer spreaders are crank operated and they also will rotate the application in clockwise motions. They work similar to the broadcast fertilizer spreader; the only difference is they are handheld and smaller.
