Landscape Maintenance - Tree Fertilizer

About Tree Fertilizers

Introduction

The last few years we have seen changes in weather climate and issues have arisen such as drought, excessive rain and hot & humid climates. These weather effects have caused many types of trees and shrubs to become dry and under nourished. Trees are showing symptoms of shredding, small foliage and brown dry stumps. Environmental stress takes a toll on trees and they begin to enter the autumn season of colors and foliage way before the season’s hits. Timely applications of tree fertilizer and water can dramatically change the impact of environmental stress and other damaging causes to the trees.
Healthy Tree

Tree fertilizer is made of many different nutrients which help maintain healthy growth of all tree species. It can also help with soil stabilization surrounding the tree and help keep the tree roots healthy. Tree fertilizer is not actually tree food. The tree utilizes the tree fertilizer ingredients to produce its own food and fruit.

Organic Tree Fertilizer

Organic tree fertilizers are made of natural compounds. They contain no chemicals and their main ingredient is generally animal manure and plant sources. This type of tree fertilizer has a slower release of nutrients and it needs to be decomposed by soils micro-organisms. This type of tree fertilizer is generally more expensive than inorganic tree fertilizers because of its ingredients. It is also a rare product to find. They ingredients used in organic tree fertilizers include the following; cottonseed meal, chicken litter, cow and horse manure, bone meal and decomposed plants.

Inorganic Tree Fertilizers

Tree Inorganic tree fertilizers are also classified as chemical tree fertilizers because they contain a variety of chemicals which act as nutrients for healthy growth and stabilization. There are nitrogen based tree fertilizers which contains the following chemicals, sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate. They are not expensive and can be purchased from local nurseries or garden sections in department stores. There are a wide variety of inorganic tree fertilizers which can be used on small or large trees.

When To Use Tree Fertilizer

It is recommended by tree specialists that trees should be fertilized at least once or twice throughout a year. The best times to use tree fertilizer is generally during early spring and summer seasons. Light applications are recommended once the tree is established. Younger trees require more fertilization and once they peak at the right height then the amount of tree fertilizer should be decreased accordingly.

How to Apply Tree Fertilizer

Any mulching that sits under a tree does not need to be removed for the tree fertilizer. The tree fertilizer can be thrown and scattered over the roots and surface of the tree but it should not touch the trees stump. The soil in which the tree fertilizer is sitting on should be heavily watered so that it will protect the trees roots from being damaged. Those who carry out these applications should be wearing protective clothing and gloves to ensure safety hazards are prevented when using chemical products. Ensure that the tree fertilizer is a solid product rather than a liquid to prevent any runoff into unwanted areas.
