About Sand
Introduction
| Sand is a naturally produced material by Mother Nature and has many useful purposes for the landscaping and building industry. The most common locations where sand is dredged from are; river banks and seashore sand bankments such as beaches. There are various types of sand and sand colors which are specifically used for different applications which include the following: |

- Golf Courses
One of the most popular features in landscaping on residential properties is paver applications. Installing pavers would be near to impossible without the sand base. The two main contributions to sand when installing pavers is the sand base provides stability to the pavers to stay in place and the other is for levelling purposes. The most recommended sand type for paver installation is coarse sand. Coarse sand is much easier to work with then any other sand type.

For the building industry, brick layers and cement renders rely heavily on sand materials. The importance of sand materials for building purposes is the required mixture of mortar and stucco for laying the bricks. The mixture of sand, cement and water is what mortar is made from. Mortar is applied in between each row of bricks so the bricks are stuck tog tether for structural stability. |
Nursery Sand
| Nursery sand is used by Nursery Centres for planting and re potting specific plants, trees and shrubs that require some amount of sand mixture. Nursery sand is mixed with fertilizers and peat moss for specific plantation types. |

Types of Sand
There are four types of sand which are used for landscaping applications and building applications. They consist of the following sand types:
- Masonry Sand
- Fill Sand
- Play Sand
- Plaster Sand

Masonry sand is used for many residential, industrial and commercial hardscaping applications such as paving. Coarse sand is unwashed sand and has medium granules. One of the benefits of coarse sand is that it is much easier to work with and is better suited to hardscaping products and materials. This type of sand is generally used for paver applications and sand grouting. |
| Play sand is a sand type which is fine, soft, washed and white in color sand granules. Most other types of sands have silica traces in them whilst play sand does not have any silica traces, as this type of sand is very safe for children to play in. Play sand is widely used in recreational parks, child care centres in the play structure arenas or a sand box. Home owners who have little children can keep the children amused for hours with a sand box in their own backyard. |

Fill sand is generally used for Golf Courses and Horse Arenas. This type of sand can be used for the feature aspects in the visual presentation of Golf Courses. For the Horse Arenas and Equestrians Centres, fill sand serves the purpose for the horses to train in the sand lightly without jolting on hard surfaces before and after racing.
