About Climbing Systems

Introduction

Climbing has been a popular sport ever since the 1700’s. As time has gone by, climbing systems have become more and more advanced starting from the simple rope to the now modern and upgraded climbing systems of ropes with iron safety rings, harnesses, and other protective gear. To define a climbing system, it is a general term standing for the equipment and techniques used by climbers to safeguard themselves against death or injury. Climbing systems are designed by engineers and physicians to offer the safest and most accessible product to get up to the highest desired places.

The Different Types of Systems

Climbing on Ropewalker

The three main climbing systems are the ropewalker, frog system and prusik knots.

Ropewalker is an extremely efficient climbing system allowing you to climb faster with less effort but because it has a large number of metal parts it is therefore heavier and a bit more complex to use. It is best to use this system when you have long drops, for it takes time to get on and off the ropes.

The next climbing system is the frog system which is lighter and simpler than the ropewalker because there are fewer parts. Another positive aspect making this climbing system popular is the ease to get on and off the rope allowing for easy changeovers.
Frog System

An alternative climbing system is the prusik knots. It is probably the most important as it is taught as a first introduction to rope work. Even though it is less efficient than the ropewalker and frog, it’s good for short drops and it’s very easy to use and carry for it is practically weightless. Such a climbing system is usually used as a backup system in case problems arise with your first choice. Also, in case of emergency prusik knots can be formed from some extra rope or shoe laces.

Climbing

Items other than the actual climbing system would be needed like rappel racks, lights, and helmets for your trip or indoor climbing activity.

It’s important to have a few training sessions to learn in depth how to use these systems, for example tying certain knots. If you have already taken courses a while back, again it’s best to have a few, quick reminder lessons.

Safety Tips

  • Read and understand all instructions and warnings of your climbing system
  • Practice and get familiar with your climbing system at ground level
  • Never climb with a piece of equipment or weapon in your possession, instead pull them up with a rope
  • Examine equipment thoroughly before each time you use them to make sure they’re working properly

Climbing Structures

For those who worry about the trip when it comes to climbing outdoors whether it’s the caves or mountains the best solution would be the pre-fabricated climbing structures. These panels have realistic rock-like features with different contours and angled surfaces and come complete and ready to install. Pre-fabricated climbing structures are a great option for climbing gyms, recreation centers and schools and are quiet economical. Climbing structures for kids are also available.
