Building waterfalls has a lot of benefits. Waterfalls are not only beautiful to look at but they add sparkle to your pond. Waterfalls also provide a way of recycling the water and it also adds valuable oxygen to the water to benefit the fish. It’s good sound and white noise helps screen out unwanted sounds of the outside world beyond your garden. Building waterfall has to take a considerable planning than other water features like fountains.
Tips on How to Build a Waterfall
To prevent water loss, waterfalls must be lined. To prevent water from splashing out, the sides of your falls must be high enough, you may also need to add or “top off” your pond weekly due to evaporation of water. A single piece of liner can be use for your pond and falls but this can be uncomfortable to work at. If a separate liner is used to a falls, the upper level must overlap the next level by several inches. The width of the water course should narrow where you plan to have it go over the falls. Rocks may also help to hold the liner in place. Put stones in the narrow area and use flat rocks on top of it. The flat rock should slope slightly toward the lower pond and project over the foundation stones directing the water out rather than down.
This will create a nice sound because it spills into the lower pond. Bring the liner up the sides of the water channel for at least 12 inches. Tuck it back into the soil and hide it using rocks. Test the flow by running water to the falls. If you are happy with the result of the test, you can mortar the stones into place on top of the liner as you would install edging.
A mortar or a concrete base may invite leaks, scrub it down with vinegar water and rinse many times, you can also run water through the system for a long time until the water pH in your reservoir pond tests below 8.5 before adding fish. Leaks and loss of water are prevented by a well-placed liner under the entire structure.
Cheap and Simple Outdoor Waterfalls
When building outdoor waterfalls, you have to consider two structures: the pool into which the water falls and the cascading structure for the waterfall itself. The cascading structure for the waterfall is often the most difficult to build. Building involves using rocks and once these two structures are in place, a pump is used in the pond to keep the water circulating from the pond to the top of the outdoor waterfall, then plunge back into the pond. Outdoor waterfalls come in all sizes and shapes and make a definite focal points. When planning your design options, the main consideration is how to achieve the necessary height for the waterfall. To channel the water when building large outdoor waterfalls, lay down a flexible liner on the ground, between the top of the waterfall and the pond. Place boulders on the liner to hide it and hold it down.
Building an outdoor waterfall with large dimensions takes much work and expense. Many homeowners with small spaces prefer a smaller waterfall, as long as it brings the wonderful soothing sound from the water cascading structure. It is easy to install and very compact and it is stacked up over the edge of the pond. It does not cost a lot because you can use natural rocks that are available within the area.
